Daughter from Yan'an
Directed by Kaoru IKEYA (NHK, 2001)
This film, which was converted from an HDTV documentary subtitled in Japanese and
English by Telesis International, is now ready for general release. The story recounts the
efforts of He Haixia to find her father, a former Red Guard who had had an affair with
her mother while "sent down" to Yan'an during the Cultural Revolution, only to abandon
her when he returned to Beijing. Presenting a close-up view of lives buffeted by the tides
of history, this stunning full-length documentary lets the subjects speak for themselves
without narration. Shown to high acclaim at the Berlin International Film Festival and
awarded the Grand Prize for the Best Documentary Film above 30 minutes at the 37th
Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, it is a riveting and
heartbreaking tale of adversity and redemption. Don't miss your chance to see it in the
theater!
